College Move-In: What ECU students always forget to bring.

ECU Freshman Packing Guide: Items You’ll Wish You’d Brought

Move-in day at East Carolina University is full of excitement, nerves, and (let’s be honest) a lot of sweat. With so much going on, it’s easy to forget a few essentials, especially the ones that make residence hall life way smoother once classes kick off.

To help you get ahead, here’s a list of items ECU freshmen often forget to pack but will want once they settle into Pirate Nation.

1. Power Strips 🔌
Outlets in rooms are often located in inconvenient spots. A surge protector with multiple plugs and USB ports makes life so much easier, especially during late-night study sessions or game nights.

2. Shower Shoes 🩴
Trust us — the communal showers in the residence halls require flip-flops. It’s a small thing that makes a big difference.

3. Cold & Allergy Medicine 💊
Whether it’s the start-of-semester sniffles or spring pollen in Greenville, having a few essentials like allergy meds and cold medicine on hand can save you a trip to CVS when you’re not feeling your best.

4. Portable Phone Charger 📵
From classes to campus events, apps and rec activities, your phone will be working overtime. A portable charger ensures you stay connected — even when you’re at the ESRC or a tailgate.

5. Laundry Bag with Straps 🧺
Dragging laundry across campus is a workout in itself. A soft bag with shoulder straps is easier to carry than a bulky basket, especially if your laundry room isn’t located on the same floor.

6. Storage Ottoman 📦

A collapsible ottoman with storage is a game-changer for residence hall rooms. It doubles as a seat, footrest, or mini table — and provides a place to stash snacks, shoes, or extra supplies without the clutter.

7. Small Fan or White Noise Machine 💨
Rooms can get hot, especially in early fall. A small fan helps with airflow and doubles as white noise if your hall gets a little loud at night.

8. Swim Gear 🤿
Did you know ECU’s Eakin Student Recreation Center has a full indoor pool? Whether you’re into lap swimming, rec swimming, or want to relax, you’ll want to pack a swimsuit (towels are provided).

9. Sports Gear
ECU has dozens of clubs and intramural sports. Once you find the one that clicks, you’ll be glad you brought your cleats, athletic attire, swim goggles, or yoga mat. CRW offers a variety of equipment to check out, but we don’t have personal items.

10. A Small First Aid Kit ⛑️
Blisters, headaches, and scraped knees happen, especially when you’re walking all over campus. Keep a basic kit in your dorm for peace of mind.

Final Thoughts: Make Your ECU Experience Yours
Your room is more than just a place to sleep — it’s where your college experience begins. Packing smart helps you focus less on what you forgot and more on making memories. From joining a new sport to hitting the pool at the rec, East Carolina University has so much to offer. Bring the essentials, skip the fluff, and get ready to make it your home away from home.
