Less Stress, More Success
Finals week is right around the corner. For many Pirates, that means late nights, study marathons, and maybe a little extra stress. But here’s the thing, success during finals isn’t just about how long you study; it’s about how well you balance your time, energy, and rest.
With the right plan (and a few well-timed breaks), you can feel confident, prepared and make finals week less stressful.
Start with a Game Plan
Begin by writing down every exam, project, and deadline you have coming up. Once you’ve got the full picture, rank them by priority, which subjects need the most attention, and which are coming up first?
Then, build a realistic schedule that includes study sessions, review time, and most importantly, breaks. Using a planner or digital calendar helps you stay organized and prevents last-minute cramming.
Break It Down
Trying to study for hours on end can backfire; your focus and memory start to drop after a while. Instead, try the 50/10 rule: study for 50 minutes, then take a 10-minute break. You could even try out the Pomodoro method: study for 25 minutes, then take a five-minute break.
During your breaks, step away from your desk. Stretch, take a walk, refill your water, or even check out Campus Recreation and Wellness Study Breaks around campus. We host plenty of ways to unwind, from free snacks and coffee to therapy dogs and crafts.
These events aren’t just fun; they help reset your mind and reduce stress so you can get back to studying refreshed.
Sleep Is a Study Strategy
It’s tempting to stay up late “just to review one more chapter,” but the truth is your brain needs sleep to store what you’ve learned. During deep sleep, your brain organizes and strengthens memories, meaning you actually learn better when you rest.
If you skip sleep, your focus, mood, and memory suffer. Try setting a nightly cutoff time and aim for at least 7–9 hours of rest. You’ll retain more, think clearly, and feel calmer during exams.
Need a boost during the day? A short 20–30 minute nap can recharge your focus, just don’t nap too long or too close to bedtime.
Move Your Body, Clear Your Mind
Physical movement is one of the best stress relievers during finals. Whether it’s a quick stretch, a walk across campus, or a visit to the Student Recreation Center, moving your body helps you refocus and recharge.
Campus Rec often offers group fitness classes, mindfulness sessions, or open rec time. Take advantage of these as part of your self-care routine. Even 15 minutes of movement can make a huge difference.
Stay Realistic and Give Yourself Grace
Your study schedule doesn’t need to be perfect; it just needs to work for you. Some days will go according to plan, and others won’t, and that’s okay. The goal is to make steady progress and take care of yourself along the way.
Remember: balance matters. Studying is important, but so are sleep, meals, movement, and connection. Attending a study break, meeting a friend for coffee, or stopping by a Rec event, those moments help you recharge and remind you you’re not in this alone.
Final Thoughts
Finals week doesn’t have to mean burnout. With a little planning, plenty of breaks, and enough rest, you can finish the semester feeling strong.
So, make your plan, hit the books, and don’t forget to take care of yourself along the way. You’ve got this, Pirates!
