How to Make a New Place Feel Like Home: Adjusting to Campus Life

Transitioning from any familiar place to life on campus can be really challenging. Starting a new chapter with new people, classes, and resources is not always easy. Adjusting to campus life can be like learning a new language. It requires consistency and patience.

I remember my first day at East Carolina University as though it were yesterday. I was terrified, but through patience, consistency, and positive self-talk, I was able to slowly but surely find my groove. The most important thing is learning not to put unnecessary pressure on yourself during this transition. College is a time for figuring things out, and everyone else is doing just that.

One way to make the transition easier is to personalize your space, whether you live in an off-campus apartment or a dorm. Making your space feel more like your own can be a great form of self-expression. Hang pictures of friends, family, and pets, and pick out your favorite colors and decor. Small touches like these can make a new space feel more familiar and comfortable.

Even when you are far away from home, surrounding yourself with pieces of what feels familiar can serve as a reminder that home is not just a place, but something you can create wherever you are.
