The ECU Eakin Recreation Center Starter Pack

Everything You Need for to know for your visit.

When it comes to finding your classes, balancing your schedule, and simply getting through your day, college can feel like a lot sometimes. The very last thing you need is to walk into the recreation center and wonder, “Okay… so, what am I supposed to do now?” Whether you’re a gym newbie or someone who just wants a break from staring at a laptop, ECU Campus Recreation & Wellness has something for you. Before you grab your student ID and head over, here’s your official ECU Eakin Student Recreation Center Starter Pack.

Step 1: Pack the Essentials

When it comes to what you need, you don’t need a suitcase full of equipment to enjoy the facility. Let’s start with the basics:

  • Comfortable workout clothes: Wear something you can move in.
  • Athletic shoes: Sneakers are a must for many activities.
  • Water bottle: Stay hydrated while you get moving.
  • ECU student ID: Keep it handy for facility access.
  • A positive attitude: Because nobody starts out knowing everything.

Step 2: Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Walking into a new facility can feel intimidating, especially when there are a lot of people in the recreation center. So, if you’re feeling unsure about where to start, how an activity works, or what opportunities are available, ask a Campus Recreation & Wellness staff member. They’re there to help you feel comfortable and get connected.

Pro tip: Start by exploring the facility. You don’t have to commit to a full workout every time you come in. Sometimes, just getting familiar with the space is a great first step.

Step 3: Meet Your New Workout Buddy — The EGYM

The new EGYM offers a technology-guided approach to strength training, making it a great option for students who are new to the gym or simply want to try something different. This innovative equipment helps track your progress and can even highlight areas where you’re improving over time. Whether you’re building confidence, switching up your routine, or simply curious about the new equipment, EGYM is worth checking out as you learn how to create effective workouts.

Pro tip: Don’t be afraid to ask our staff how EGYM works. You’re not expected to walk in knowing everything!

Step 4: Make a Splash at the Pool

Not every workout has to involve lifting weights or running on a treadmill. Sometimes, you may want to do something lower intensity that still gives your body a great workout. The pool is a fantastic option for students who enjoy swimming, want to try a different activity, or simply need a break from their usual routine. After a long day of classes, spending time in the water can be a refreshing way to relax, recharge, and reset.

Pro tip: Check the pool schedule and get involved in one of the many aquatic activities offered throughout the semester.

Step 5: Take Your Workout to New Heights

Another great feature of the recreation center is the rock climbing wall. Rock climbing is a fun way to challenge yourself, test your strength, and try something completely new. And no, you don’t have to be an experienced climber to give it a shot. Everyone has a first climb, and your first goal doesn’t have to be reaching the top. Whether you’re climbing with friends or trying it on your own, it’s a great opportunity to do something different, build confidence, and have a little fun.

Pro tip: Start with a beginner-friendly route and focus on enjoying the experience. Every climber starts somewhere!

Step 6: Find Your Recreation Personality

If you love competition: Check out intramural sports or recreational games.

If you like trying new things: Explore EGYM or the rock-climbing wall.

If you prefer a change of pace: Head to the pool and add swimming to your routine.

If you enjoy working out with others: Look into the group fitness classes and activities available.

If you just want to get moving: Start with a simple activity and see where it takes you.

The best recreation routine is one that fits your interests and keeps you coming back.

Ready to Find Your New Favorite Campus Spot?

College is so much more than just classes, exams, and trying to remember what day it is. It’s also about finding your people, discovering new interests, and making memories along the way. Campus Recreation & Wellness gives you another way to do all three.

Grab your sneakers, bring your water bottle, and get ready to explore. Try the new EGYM, take a swim, challenge yourself on the rock-climbing wall, or find another activity that catches your attention. Just show up, try something new, and make recreation part of your ECU experience.
