5 Unwritten Gym Rules You Should Know

Going to the gym can be intimidating for some, or it might be something you recently picked up and are excited about. You could even be someone who has been going for a while. Regardless of how long you’ve been going, it’s important to remember these unwritten rules to make your workout—and other people’s workouts—easier.
1. Re-rack Your Weights
This also includes putting everything you’ve used back in its proper place. Keeping everything organized helps maintain a tidy gym and makes it easier for the next person to set up for their workout.
2. Wipe Down the Equipment
Wiping everything down doesn’t just apply to equipment; it also includes keeping your space clean. This can mean cleaning up any chalk, spilled pre-workout, or water you accidentally spilled. Cleaning up after yourself prevents accidents, reduces the spread of germs, and helps the equipment last longer.
3. Be Considerate of Others
While going to the gym is about improving yourself, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be considerate of other people. It’s always best to ask someone if they’re done with their set before using equipment, avoid lingering on your phone for too long between sets, and be mindful of the time. This ensures that everyone gets their sets done efficiently.
4. Use an Appropriate Amount of Equipment
This ties in with being considerate of others. Taking a bunch of dumbbells to do a drop set or monopolizing a specific machine for your entire workout can prevent others from completing their routines promptly. Especially during peak hours when the gym is busier, remember that everyone is just trying to get through their workout.
5. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
Everyone begins their fitness journey somewhere, and we all face challenges with specific weights or techniques at some point. It takes time to develop proper workout routines and perfect your form. Don’t hesitate to ask someone to teach you the correct form or to spot you. At the Eakin Student Recreation Center, we employ Fitness Attendants who will teach you how to use any equipment and spot you when needed. Most people are happy to help, as we all want to ensure you’re completing your exercises safely and effectively.
Following these unspoken gym rules can not only make your workouts easier and safer but also create opportunities to make new friends and build a sense of community!
