Swim Lessons

The American Red Cross has developed swimming lessons for adults and youth that allow everyone the opportunity to learn in a safe environment, at their own pace. Our Learn-to-Swim classes are taught by certified, knowledgeable, and caring instructors who can help swimmers at every level feel comfortable in, on, and around the water and progress to the next level.

Group Swim Lessons

Group swim lessons are a great way to progress your ability in, on, and around the water surrounded by peers who have similar swimming abilities. We take pride in keeping our group swim lessons small, maxing our class size at four participants so that each swimmer has more opportunity for feedback from the instructor. As an American Red Cross Learn-to-swim facility, we follow curriculum that is based on a national standard that places emphasis on meeting the individual where their needs are and weaving in water safety into each lesson.

Please note that due to the depth of our pool, we do not instruct headfirst entries or dives.

Youth Group Swim Lessons

Landlubber (Youth Group Lessons Pre-k)
Landlubber group lessons introduce basic aquatic skills. Children aged four and younger start developing positive attitudes and safe practices in, on, and around the water.

Mighty Matey (Youth Group Lessons Level 1)
Mighty Matey Group Lessons introduces basic aquatic skills, which participants continue to build on as they progress through Learn-to-Swim. In addition, participants start developing positive attitudes, effective swimming habits, and safe practices in and around the water.

Swashbuckler (Youth Group Lessons Level 2)
The objective of Swashbuckler Group Lessons is to give participants success with fundamental skills. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Participants learn to glide and float without support and recover to a vertical position. Participants further develop simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back, laying the foundation for future strokes. New water safety topics are introduced, and previously acquired water safety knowledge and skills are reinforced.

First Mate (Youth Group Lessons Level 3)
The objectives of First Mate Group Lessons are to expand proficiency of previously learned skills by providing additional guided practice. Participants learn and practice survival floating and learn to swim front crawl and elementary backstroke at rudimentary proficiency levels. You introduce the scissors and dolphin kicks and extend the time duration for treading water. As in all levels, new and previously addressed water safety topics are included. Participants who successfully complete First Mate Group Lessons have achieved basic water competency in a pool environment

Captain (Youth Group Lessons Level 4)
In Captain Group Lessons, participants improve their aquatic skills and increase their endurance by swimming the strokes learned in First Mate Group Lessons (i.e., front crawl, elementary backstroke) for greater distances and with more advanced proficiency. Participants add arm actions to the previously learned scissors kick and breaststroke kick to perform the rudimentary sidestroke and to learn the breaststroke. Participants also begin to learn the back crawl and butterfly, as well as the basics of performing a simple open turn at a wall.
