October’s Club Sport of the Month: Club Cross Country and Track

Club Cross Country and Track emerged as the Club Sport of the Month for October! While staying motivated to run can be a challenge for many, club president Brian McGill says, “You have to figure out your “why, why you’re running”. For me, I just love to get better. See my times go down, I love to see I’m literally improving my body”.  Self-improvement is a healthy way to set goals for yourself. As Brian says, finding your “why” is crucial, not only in Cross Country and Track but in all aspects of life.

McGill explains some of the camaraderie formed within the team because they are all going through the same thing.

“We’re all in the same race together, we’re all feeling tired. If I’m lagging or a teammate is lagging, we’re right there to pick them back up,” says McGill.

Most people have heard of the ‘Freshman 15’, so it is important to remember to stay active.

“It’s always been a thing that just 30 minutes a day of light exercise is good for you, and that’s all we try to aim for, for anybody,” says the club’s Vice President, Emory Trigg.

Club Cross country and Track has proven to be a great form of group exercise. The club allows teammates to choose how hard to push themselves, allowing anyone the opportunity to join.

“The good thing about our club is you don’t have to run what we run. Here you can go out and walk a mile and come back and we’ll say ‘good job’,” says Creech.

Having some of the lowest club dues, and members not being required to take part in meets, the barrier to entry is relatively low.

Club Secretary Morgan Creech says that, to her, being a Pirate means, “Just being home honestly, I found my new place”.
