National Recovery Month: Running for Recovery
September is National Recovery Month!
This is an observance that aims to spread awareness of mental health struggles and to provide a supportive space for those who are in recovery from drugs, alcohol, and other behavioral addictions. Throughout the U.S., the rate of adverse and traumatic experiences, as well as misuse of drugs among college students is on the rise.
This is why it is important to be aware, informed, and inspired to support others while recognizing these resilient survivors along their road to recovery. This month, the Well-Being Collective brings you the very first Recovery Run Club. During this event, the ECU community will have the opportunity to run or walk in support of those in recovery from alcohol, drugs, and other behavioral addictions. While running has been shown to be an effective tool to support long-term addiction recovery, there are also a variety of health benefits that can come from engaging in this activity.
Challenge Yourself
Running can be physically demanding (I’m sweating just thinking about it), but this can be a good thing! Challenging yourself to engage in just 10 to 20 minutes of cardio per day can improve heart health, strengthen your muscles, increase bone density, and lower your blood pressure. If running isn’t quite your speed, take it slow and enjoy a calm walk out in nature.
Increase your Mindfulness
Mindful running involves running with clear intention and allowing your mind and body to connect and create balance. Practicing mindful running can decrease stress and anxiety, improve sleep, and improve your mood and performance. On your run, focus on your body and your breathing to stay connected to the present moment.
Build Community
While running is often seen as a solo activity, it can also be a great social sport. It’s a great way to meet new people and explore new places in your community. Use this as an opportunity to learn something new and cultivate healthy relationships. Next time you want to take the scenic route, don’t forget to invite a friend!
