For Families and Loved Ones
We join with the Association of Recovery in Higher Education Board in their statement to you:
Dear Families and Loved Ones,
By now, you know that a recovery-friendly support network is crucial in your student’s recovery. Offering the right kind of support to your student can have a tremendous impact on their lives. Finding a Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP) or Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC) on a college campus is a big decision. The Association of Recovery in Higher Education (ARHE) aims to help change the trajectory of recovery students’ lives and offers resources and information for those looking to be a part of this kind of a support system.
3 Points to Consider in Helping Your Student Find a CRC:
- Ownership and Autonomy
Your student is the one that will be a Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP) member. Be supportive, but let them ask questions, fill out their own applications, and see what program they believe will be best for their recovery. Allowing your student to take care of some of the footwork provides a sense of autonomy and ownership of the experience. - Healthy Compromise
What works for you may not work for your student. Discussing all options and possibilities together may help guide you to a compromise that works best for your family. - Support
CRPs are not designed as treatment programs; they are designed to offer recovery support on college campuses so your student has a safe place to navigate what can be a hostile environment, a college campus.
ECU Recovery is pleased to assist you in making the right decision for your family, with your student’s involvement and input. Feel free to call our Collegiate Recovery Community Coordinator at 252-328-4958 or email us at ecucrc@ecu.edu with any questions you may have!
