What is a sport related concussion (SRC)?

A sport related concussion (SRC) is a traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused either by a direct blow to the head, face, neck or elsewhere on the body with an impulsive force transmitted to the head. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells.

IM Leagues and/or Facility Access Suspensions:

Participating in exercise and/or sport with a concussion can lead to serious injury and even death, referred to as Second Impact Syndrome. It is our job as the Athletic Training staff to protect our students from prolonged damage caused by an SRC.  Any student or member with a suspected concussion will be suspended on IM Leagues and/or from the ECU Campus Rec facilities. They must see a CRW Athletic Trainer to be evaluated to either rule out a concussion or the member has been safely returned to play by the CRW Athletic Trainers in conjunction with a physician before the suspension can lifted.
