What is a sport related concussion (SRC)?

A sport related concussion (SRC) is a traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused either by a direct blow to the head, face, neck or elsewhere on the body with an impulsive force transmitted to the head. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells.

IM Leagues and/or Facility Access Suspensions:

Participating in exercise or sports with a concussion can result in serious injury or even death, a condition known as Second Impact Syndrome. The Athletic Training staff is responsible for protecting students from the prolonged effects of a suspected sport-related concussion (SRC). Any student or member with a suspected concussion will be suspended in IMLeagues and/or restricted from ECU Campus Recreation & Wellness facilities.

Club Sport athletes must be evaluated by a CRW Athletic Trainer to either rule out a concussion or to be cleared for return to play in coordination with a physician. Suspensions will not be lifted until this process is complete.

Participants in open recreation or intramural sports with a suspected concussion must be evaluated by a physician—either through ECU Student Health Services (schedule an appointment) or an outside provider—and must submit medical clearance to the Athletic Training staff before returning to activity or having suspensions removed.
