Note to a Freshman: Get Involved
It’s nice to think that you have it all figured out in high school. You did your four years of time, you think you’re a decent driver and you have a handful of forever friends; Good job, the memories are solid. Now on to the next chapter.
Movies make college appear to be the greatest years of your life, and they can be. But none of those movies are about the kids that sit at home and watch Netflix all day. Don’t get me wrong, those days are necessary too. You will need some down time. But you know what can be better than Netflix alone? Netflix with friends.
Whether you’re an incoming freshman or a transfer student, it’s completely normal to be intimidated by the thought of a new campus and community culture. Everything you thought mattered no longer does. You’re just as new as the person next to you, so say hello. Disclaimer: Nice people love other nice people. The thing about Pirate Nation is, we always look out for a fellow Pirate.
True Pirates get involved. ECU is home to over 500 student-run organizations and we highly recommend becoming a part of something. We were raised to be joiners. Whether it was the soccer team, choir practice after school, or cheering on your home-team from the stands, everyone comes together with a purpose.
It can be easy to get lost or lose sense of who you are when you’re surrounded by so many people you don’t know, in an environment you’re unfamiliar with. So be eager to meet a new friend at orientation. Be kind to your roommate and the people in your classes. Don’t be afraid to Get a Clue from the people tabling on the mall, or to Raid the Rec during your first week of school. The opportunities to get involved on campus and meet your people are close to endless. Remember, you’re just one Pirate away from a memory.

Esfácil pensar que sabes todo de la vida cuando estas en la preparatoria. Serviste tus cuatro años en la escuela, piensas que puedes manejar un carro mejor que tus papas, y tienes unos cuantos amigos que tendrás por el resto de tu vida; Buen trabajo, tienes bonitas memorias. Ahora es tiempo para el próximo capítulo.
Las películas hacen parecer que tu tiempo en la universidad será uno de los mejores de tu vida, y lo puede ser. Pero ningunas de esas películas son sobre los muchachos que se quedan mirando Netflix todo el día en sus casas. No me malinterpretes, esos días sin hacer nada también son necesarios. Es importante encontrar tiempo para poder relajarte. ¿Pero sabes que puede ser mejor que ver Netflix a solas? Netflix con amigos.
Si eres un estudiante de primer año o un estudiante de intercambio, es completamente normal sentirse inseguro al pensar de un campus nuevo y de ajustarte a una nueva comunidad. Todo lo que pensabas que importaba anteriormente, ya no importa. ¡Eres tan nuevo como la persona a tu lado, saluda! Atención: Buenas personas aman a otras buenas personas. La cosa bonita de nuestra Nación de Piratas es que siempre velamos por otros Piratas.
Verdaderos Piratas son involucrados. ECU es hogar a más de 500 organizaciones estudiantiles y les recomiendo hacerse parte de algo. Desde pequeños, nos han enseñado a trabajar y ser involucrados. Si era siendo parte de un equipo de fútbol, ir a prácticas de coro después de la escuela, o echarle porras a tu equipo de patria, todos nos hemos juntado con un propósito.
Puede ser fácil perderse a sí mismo cuando estas rodeado con gente que no conoces, en un lugar en cual todavía no te sientes muy a gusto. Por estas razones, es hora de emocionarte por hacer un nuevo amigo durante tus sesiones de orientación. Se amable a tus compañeros de vivienda y a las personas en tus clases. No tengas miedo de acercarte a la gente detrás de las mesas durante el evento Get a Clue, y diviértete durante Raid the Rec la primera semana de clases. Las oportunidades para involucrarte en campus y conocer a tu gente son casi infinitas. Acuérdate, solo estas un Pirata lejos de una memoria.
