Are you an unorganized mess? Me too!

In order to achieve success, you must be clear on what it is you truly want. One way to increase your focus is by setting goals. Breaking your long-term dreams into smaller, achievable goals makes turning that dream into a reality seem more reachable.  Goals trigger behavior and actions.  They promote self-discipline, and sustain momentum and patience. In the end, patience becomes experience.  Goals help you hold yourself accountable for failures and they also help you track your progress! By completing or not completing the goals you’ve set for yourself, you can see why you are or why you are not where you want yourself to be. This will help you stay focused on your purpose.

  • Someday Goal: What’s ONE thing you want to do someday?
    • Think about the one thing you want to accomplish someday. Whether it be your ultimate career goal, your health and fitness goals, or anything you want to achieve in your personal life. Write it down, read it, and visualize yourself doing it every day. Not only will this increase your focus and passion towards your goals, but by imagining yourself already in the position you desire, you become more accustomed to that lifestyle you want to live. By putting in consistent action, you’re now bringing your dream closer and closer to your reality!
  • 5 Year Goal: Based on your someday goal, what’s ONE thing you can do in the next five years?
    • Five years out from your someday goal, where do you see yourself? Are you on the brink of success or have you squandered your time by shifting your focus elsewhere? What can you do in the next five years that will bring you closer to achieving your goals?
  • 1 Year Goal: Based on your five-year goal, what’s ONE thing you can do this year?
    • “New year, new me” right? WRONG! Don’t wait until January 1stto start focusing on your desires. Remember that 1 year from today and 1 year from New Year’s day is still the same amount of time so start now! What can you do within the next year that will bring you closer to your larger goals?
  • Monthly Goal: Based on your 1-year goal, what’s ONE thing you can do this month?
    • Your monthly goals will be the connection you have to achieving your year’s purpose. Break down your yearly goals into small projects that you can complete in 30 days or less. Remember that small progress is still progress!
  • Weekly Goal: Based on your monthly goal, what’s ONE thing you can do this week?
    • Here is where you should break down the actions you’ll have to take every week in order to accomplish your monthly goals. How much action is required every week for you to achieve your dream? I recommend sitting down every Sunday and planning out your week according to your goals. Anything you weren’t able to accomplish in seven days, you can now roll over into the next week.
  • Daily Goal: Based on your weekly goal, what’s ONE thing you can do today?
    • Sit down every morning or before you go to sleep at night and write down what you can every day to take small steps towards your goals. Don’t stress yourself out by putting too much on your plate, keep it short and sweet. Take a step back and allow time for extra work throughout your day. Don’t let the day control you, have a set plan and be sure to prioritize what’s most important to you.

Be sure to share your personal goals with the people you trust to hold you accountable in a supportive way. This will make you feel twice as obligated to accomplishing them! While goal setting may be viewed as simply saying what you want to do, be sure to fully understand why you even want to do it in the first place.  Remember that success is defined by everyone individually and that what may seem like baby steps to you, could seem like enormous strides to the people counting on you. You will never achieve the goals that you never made the effort to set so if you haven’t been breaking down your goals, it’s never too late to turn goal setting into goal gettingso start right now!
